Gay story games

Video games are becoming increasingly diverse and have provided a platform for representation of LGBTQ characters. Here are a few of the best gay story games that highlight the diversity of the community. Ellie's story in 2013's zombie apocalypse game The Last of Us was one of the first triple-A lesbian protagonist stories. Similarly, Dragon Age: Origins has many options for player romance with various NPCs.

Dragon Age: Origins
Dragon Age: Origins is one of the most notable games for its openness towards sexuality and relationships in videogames. Its series was ranked number one in the "Can You Be Gay?" survey for LGBT gay gamer representation, and was also lauded for its use of pronouns and character creation systems.

However, the storytelling gay game still doesn't satisfy everyone in terms of its LGBTQ representation, especially for those who are interested in romance. Leilana and Zevran are bisexual characters that can be romanced, but their stories are pretty minor and don't affect the main plot of the gay story game.

Dorian Pavus, a mage from Tevinter Emporium, is a gay character with a backstory that includes almost being put through a form of magical conversion therapy, which is similar to real-life experiences faced by many queer people. Although he has a romance option, players can choose not to pursue it if they don't want to. Regardless, he still represents a significant step forward for LGBT gaming.

Life is Strange
In a gay story-telling game genre that usually centers around guys, Life is Strange took the lead in focusing on two teen girls' problems. This was a bold move and got it the Gayming award for Authentic Representation. The story gaygame features Max Caulfield, a shy photography senior who gets to explore her hometown of Arcadia Bay with childhood friend Chloe Price. She gets a new ability to rewind time, which helps her uncover what's really going on in the town.

This gay story game has received critical acclaim for its character development, rewind mechanic and tackling of taboo subjects. It has also been criticized for its use of outdated slang and lip-syncing but overall it's one of the best gay story games of this generation.

While it does have some problematic sex and relationships, it also features many LGBTQ+ side characters. Unlike some gay games with men stories that feature LGBTQ characters, it doesn't try to push them on the player. Max and Chloe's relationship isn't wrapped up in a tragic lesbian ending but simply as a sisterly love.

Undertale
Five years after its release, Undertale still holds up as a gay story game worth playing. Designed by independent developer Toby Fox, who also made Homestuck (the Ulysses of the Internet), Undertale is an idiosyncratic role-playing game where you can choose how to interact with monsters in the world it presents.

From socially awkward aeroplanes to demonic flowers and pun-loving skeletons, your interactions with the inhabitants of Undertale can have a profound effect on the story that unfolds. It's not hard to see why this story gay game has inspired millions of fan video edits, fan art, cosplay, soundtrack remixes and a raging obsession with Sans the skeleton.

It's also a story telling gay game that understands its audience in a deep and intimate way, even if it does seem to be playing on their guilt. The player character, Frisk, is nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns; gay gameplay actively encourages players to avoid killing people (to combat that dang toxic masculinity, despite the fact that it shows how uncompromising mercy can be just as harmful), Undyne and Alphys are gay romance couples and the list goes on.

Dream Daddy
A few years ago, Dream Daddy swept gaming and fandom communities like a summer storm. This gay dad dating simulator set a new standard for queer narratives, but it wasn't without controversy. In the storytelling gay game, you romance other father-figures in a small cul-de-sac neighborhood. The gay story game has a relaxing tone that celebrates family and community, but there are some disturbing aspects.

Grey and Shaw wanted to make a gay game for gamers and Tumblr fans who enjoy story gay games that let them hang out with their favorite YouTube hosts (the Game Grumps). They had a limited amount of time, so they wrote the entire story concurrently with development-reworking the script until the last minute.

This approach meant that the story-telling gay game online had very little room for player choice and a lot of exposition. However, it also meant that the story missed opportunities to be more nuanced. Unlike the work of gay developer Robert Yang, Dream Daddy is very rarely erotic and leaves out key elements of queer history and culture.
